About the Book
“Joy, The Mighty Maremma”

About the Author
Kit De Young
Kit, a lifelong dog enthusiast and former nurse, has always dreamed of owning a farm. Alongside her husband Russ, they’ve realized this dream with a farm featuring a fenced vegetable garden, fruit orchard, chickens, and Nubian dairy goats. They also have Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs), a breed she had never encountered before. While LGDs are exceptional at protecting livestock from predators, they are not suited as pets and can be dangerous to other animals and people. Despite their challenging nature, Kit finds joy in their role and is pleased that a local boy finds solace in a book about their farm’s harmony.
Editor's Review
Joy, The Mighty Maremma is a fun children’s book about a puppy who wants to be loved by his fellow farm animals, but isn’t, until they discover his purpose in life, to protect them. The illustrations by Deborah Ann Dawson are delightful as well. There is an extra bonus on the last page, where Kit DeYoung describes LGDs (Livestock Guardian Dogs), and how they are bred to protect livestock, and therefore might not be the best pets.
